In the last twenty years, New England women have changed the landscape of what the word “farming” means. Our book, by offering a view of farm life in New Hampshire today, shows that the business of farming is becoming modernized, in large part by women. More than an advertisement for locally-grown foods; it is a revelation about the new products and marketing methods, community outreach, time and hard work that women farmers are investing in their family farm’s future.
The book also demonstrates how women are increasing public awareness about our food by attracting a burgeoning audience to see and taste New Hampshire’s bounty.

About the Artist:
Leslie Tuttle worked as a photojournalist in a dozen developing countries for organizations including Oxfam America and Partners In Health. When abroad, she focused on working women from nomadic tribes in the mountains of Turkey to waste pickers in Brazil. The difficult lives of all these women have long since rid her of any romanticized notion of rural life. She has acquired enormous respect for people who work incredibly hard to sustain themselves and their families, and for whom being picturesque holds no coin. She recently turned her attention to rural development in her birth state of New Hampshire. Collaborating with author, Helen Brody, to explore the working women farmers of New Hampshire, Leslie brings her career as a social documentary photographer to investigate the ways that women farmers in New
Hampshire are innovating to achieve their farms’ survival. Noting that there are more similarities than differences between the hard working women she encountered in other countries and those in this book, she notes how much she enjoys the experience that each individual farmer has a unique story to discover and share.
