CONCORDIA CONSORT, MetroWest’s Recorder Quartet under the direction of Shiela Beardslee Bosworth, presents Teares of A Sorrowful Soule, a program of  Renaissance and Baroque settings of chorales and psalms for Lent, on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., at the historic Loring-Greenough House, 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain MA. , as part of the Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House Parlor Concert Series.

The music is intense, harmonically biting and bitter sweet in tone for this penitential season. Members of the Concordia Consort, Nouri Newman and  Brian Warnock, recorders, and Sheila Beardslee, director, will welcome guests Alan Karass, recorder and Eileen Cecilia Callahan, soprano. Among the beautiful German chorale tunes included are “Vater unser im Himmelreich,” “Durch Adams Fall” and “O Lamm Gottes unschuldig” in simple hymn-like settings and transcriptions of complex organ chorale preludes.   Included in the psalm settings are Hassler’s deeply chromatic “Ad Dominum tribularer”, Alessandro Scarlatti’s passionate “Ad te Dominum levavi animam meam” and Byrd’s heartfelt “Miserere mei.” In addition to these psalms and chorales, the Consort is featured in fantasias and psalm settings by English composers Bull and Morley and Italian masters Cato and Lasso.

Meet the musicians of the Concordia Consort at afternoon tea following the program.

The Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House series recreates the atmosphere of 18th and 19th century “musical afternoons” in the 1760 Loring-Greenough House, twice monthly, October to May. Tickets are available at the door: donation $15 ($10 seniors, students and JPTC members). Space is limited; reservations are suggested—call 617-524-3158 or email lghouseconcerts@aim.com.
